I've got some time on my hands right now. Long story short I tore my ACL for the second time, and am on bed rest. With the playoffs about to be underway I went back and watched Boston's entire ALDS from a season ago. I just wanted to remind myself what those games were like. Who played well? Who flopped? Our young core is often called soft, and nobody is really giving us a chance against the Astros this weekend. For many of our positions players last year was their first taste of October. And even thought we got swept, the series as a whole was closer than I remembered. Games 1 and 3 were instant classics.
You can read Game 1's recap here. Game 3 coming tomorrow.
-David Price vs Corey Kluber
-Friday afternoon start time
-Lebron pumping up the crowd pre game
*Before the game starts I feel obligated to tell everyone that this day is the most frustrated I’ve ever been maybe. I got out of work a couple of innings after the game started and was trying to stream the game on my phone on the T. THEN I miss my stop, had just moved to the city so didn’t know where I was, and had to fucking Uber home through traffic. By the time I got to my apartment Price had already blown this one. Let's get into it.
-Lots of pre game talk about Price’s post-season struggles. Welp.
-Reminder that Kluber hadn’t pitched in 10 days prior to this start, we didn’t even know if he was fully healthy. Welp.
-Mookie grounds into a double play to end an uneventful first. Here comes Price.
-A 1-2-3 first for the $217 million man! I can picture myself still at work still following along on Twitter at this point, and being giddy at the thought of Price having post-season success in a Red Sox uniform
-A 1-2-3 second for Kluber. He’s clearly healthy and is locked the fuck in
-Price’s second inning starts innocently enough, with a ground out and a single. I know this is only going to feed the notion that he’s mentally weak and can’t handle the playoffs, but in reality Price just doesn’t have that killer look in his eyes that I’ve seen from Pedro, Schilling, and Lester in October before.
-Jose Ramirez reaches on an error followed by a Brandon Guyer RBI single. I’m sweating.
-Aaaaand there it is. A 3 run homer from Lonnie Chisenhall (of all the fucking people) to make it 4-0. Price has still only gotten four outs. His chance at playoff success with us is ruined. Kluber is dealing. This is when I missed my T stop.
-Price walks the next batter and there’s already action in the Sox pen.
-Next couple of innings are pretty boring, ultimately Price gets yanked with just one out in the 4th. Matt Barnes is now pitching just 10 outs into the ballgame with our team down 1-0 in the series. Shit.
-Price’s final stat line: 3 1/3 innings, 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks, and 3 K’s. $217 million ladies and gentlemen.
-Next few innings are pretty boring also, Tribe up 6-0 after six. I’m home by this point, and it was the most frustrated I had been in years between the hassle of getting home and seeing the absolute egg Price and the Sox laid.
-Not that it matters, but even if Price had pitched well we weren’t beating Kluber.
-The announcers just said the Sox had an 11 game win streak in September. I totally forgot that.
-We end up losing 6-0. Had just 3 hits in the game. Just incredibly concerning how lifeless the team looks.
Finals thoughts: Yuck.
“We’re on to game 3”
